Guest Review: “Mass Effect 2″

Posted by scumminik on February 4, 2010

Note by Dom: Please welcome our good friend Phantom who was so kind to provide us with a detailed review of Mass Effect 2. His review can also be found at the lovely home of the Super Happy Sparkle Origin Brigade! (I had such fun typing the full title of that website… )

So, I need to start off by saying that, like everyone else, I’ll mostly be comparing Mass Effect 2 to it’s predecessor.  Either one is still better than at least 90% of video games in the world, and it’s hard to compare Bioware’s trademark Action-RPG epics to anything other than themselves.  If I’m hard on Mass Effect 2, and I feel like I will be, that’s why.  I also feel like I’m in the minority in a lot of these opinions, but…hey, that’s why they’re opinions.

Happy New Year & A Major Kiss Ass Session

Posted by scumminik on January 1, 2010

Hello GeekEteers. When this goes live, most of you will be drunk off your asses, so postpone the reading until after the hangover.

What follows is very close to being a blog. It chronicles (with a lot of timejumps) the past few years of yours truly. It’s also a big big kissing of the ass of one Kevin Smith. With this text, our KS theme will end (for now). If you’re bitter about the focus the site took over the past few weeks, just know: No Kevin Smith, no GeekEteers. And now, read on. The LongBox: Stream of Nerd-dom, 2009 Style.

Posted by bobtgoldfish on December 31, 2009

The LongBox

In his Last update of 2009 it’s time for BobTgoldfish to talk about… well anything that comes to mind.

Yes, that’s right folks, Bob can’t sleep again and is it because of these things? Who knows but he’s sure as hell trying to put them all down on paper for you folks. For you to agree, disagree abstain whatever, at the end of the day he’s just dropping his brain on his keyboard Stream of Consciousness style (and be warned, the stream is often influenced by stuff that is happening around him in reality, not necessarily on the page so it might not makes sense.)

So for the final time in 2009

read on, dear reader, read on. Read the rest of this entry »

Background Noise #4 – Stereotypes, Kevin Smith, Weed and Nazis

Posted by scumminik on November 13, 2009

When I started this madness of talking about the bearded wordsmith of Jersey, I should have known I was not going to be able to stay on target while recording these podcasts. I probably even knew. Heck, as much fun as it is to talk about the the man who influenced my life from afar (and without knowing it) for almost a decade now, these podcasts tend to be a lot more fun when the subject suddenly becomes something else.

Today our guestcaster (there, new word, suck it Webster’s) is one Matt Cohen one of the two main players over at Bagged and Boarded. Naturally, we are discussing (aside from Kevin Smith of course) topics that intrigue, fascinate, shock, repel and confuse. So basically we are on the same level you would expect from a Sunday morning cartoon.

Music is again provided by our good friend Joe Covenant whose fascinating tune It All Makes Sense at the End is now our theme song. The lyrics were just geeky enough and the music more than good enough. Way better even.

As a special guest star is ScottC of Weekend Justice …umh fame (?). His question is being discussed at length and detail.
The home of the Weekend Justice League, Needcoffee.com along with its MCP Widgett Walls get a mention as well. Of course, the name of the keymaster of Quickstopentertainment.com, one Ken Plume is also being dropped, continuing a trend we started on the last podcast.

Thanks to Matt for providing the madness, you can check out, the beloved Bagged & Boarded podcast here and their webboard here.
If you want to hear more from Joe, his songs can be found here.

WARNING: Sometimes we curse, sometimes we swear, you don’t like? We don’t care.
WARNING: We’re discussing some rather serious things here alongside with silliness.

“Background Noise #3 – How Many Names Can We Drop”

Posted by scumminik on November 9, 2009

Hello, hello, hello,

today we have a special treat for the lovers of music and for masochists. We were lucky enough to have Joe Covenant provide us with the theme song for this episode (and maybe the whole damn podcast?) as well as a nice outro song. Our production value just doubled! For all you masochist out there, we have my damaged voice and brain, which are still recovering from a severe cold. (Which is probably why I managed to fuck up the grammar in the introduction.)

Our guest in this second (somewhat) Kevin Smith centric podcast is the One-Minute-Podcaster and Webcomic creator Brendoman. Witness how we geek out about Smith, Scumm based computer games and all other things geek. As a special bonus, Brendoman was able to give us some word on “A Couple of Dicks” due to legal obligations, his comments on that are short but sweet.

Over the span of sixty plus minutes, we manage to drop enough names that we appear to be (desperate)  G-list celebrities, lose track of our own conversation and somehow manage to have more endings to the show, than Steve Jackson included in “The Lord of the Rings.”

Thanks to Brendoman for taking the time, you can check out Brax here, the beloved Bagged & Boarded podcast here, their webboard here and Brendoman is also running his own web presence over here.
Many thanks go out to Joe Covenant who gave us two lovely tunes and shows our listeners by comparison how poor our sound quality actually is. We’re working on that. More of Joe’s songs can be found here.

WARNING: Sometimes we curse, sometimes we swear, you don’t like? We don’t care.
WARNING: Don’t pump up the volume too high at the beginning.

“Background Noise #2 – Kevin Smith, Accents and All Things Geek”

Posted by scumminik on October 28, 2009

Here we go again.

Our second episode is the first of a few podcasts that will (feature the attempt to) focus on one subject: The work and career of one Kevin Smith. This time I had the pleasure of talking to Will Turner who is not only a writer for GeekEteers but also the creator and writer of the British “Reynard City” webcomic, so again, you will have the pleasure to listen to a German butchering the English language and a British accent. Accents are one of the many topics we talk about aside from the films of Kevin Smith because, naturally, we digress and talk about movies, comics, games, Hitler, comedy and the current state of our global economy. OK that last one was a lie.

If you want to read the words of Will Turner you can order his book on Amazon and if you want to listen to that comedy madness that is “Let’s be having you“, then go here.

WARNING: Sometimes we curse, sometimes we swear, you don’t like? We don’t care.

“Background Noise #1 – Patton Oswald vs. Liam Neeson”

Posted by scumminik on September 27, 2009

First of all: I apologize.

Second of all: Here it is, the very first episode of the podcast that was never meant to be, an exchange between two major geeks, namely our Conman Bob T. Goldfish and myself. The main subject of our first bit of audio content is the cast of the new “A-Team” movie and who our choices for the parts of Hannibal, B.A., Murdock and Face would have been. Naturally, we digress quite a bit from that, talking about almost every movie and TV franchise in the history of entertainment.

Third of all: The audio quality is…well it is OK. It sounds like a Skype-call because it is, oddly enough, I sound like I am trapped in a well because I didn’t realize until the end of the recording, that my computer was set up to use the built-in microphone instead of the really good one I was actually talking into. If you still don’t understand what we’re saying… well Bob is English, I am German.

As of right now, we don’t have an intro music or any of that fancy stuff, I am currently researching that thing but if any of you musicians out there wants to offer us a song just send us an email or a twitter message.

Here we go, I hope you will enjoy two geeks talking about “The A-Team” as if it was Shakespeare. Which, let’s Face it (yes, I went there and now I will never be able to come back), it is.

WARNING: Sometimes we curse, sometimes we swear, you don’t like? We don’t care.
WARNING: Spoiler Alert for the “Buffy Season 8″ comic

Thanks.

A year ago people started trying to save the house in which the character Superman was created. The project caught our attention and we did our – admittedly very small – part and put up a permanent link to the charity website OrdinaryPeopleChangeTheWorld.com and published a little article about it. A year ago the video presenting us with the state the house was in, made us weep, now this video may wet our eyes as well, but in a good way. Thanks to everyone who participated.
